Music video

Rihanna singing in the music video.

The video was shot on April 13, 2007.[5] It was directed by Chris Applebaum.

It premiered at 10:00 a.m. on April 26, 2007 at www.thisisrihanna.com. Downloads were made available for those in the U.S only. The video is now all over the internet.

The video starts out with Jay-Z singing his part in a rain of sparks. Rihanna starts singing in a steamy place. Later, she starts dancing with water splashing against her, even though she is not getting wet and it is almost as if she is fighting and dodging the water. She is dressed in an outfit dancing with an umbrella in a hallway. There are shots of appearing to be naked but actually in a silver body suit. She then starts dancing where Jay-Z was singing with her umbrella.

There are two different versions of the video. The MTV, BET, and VH1 version which premiered on April 30, 2007 is different from the one that aired online in that there are added water effects during the splashing sequence. On May 14th, 2007, the Umbrella video premiered on BET's 106 & Park at number 9. This is Rihanna's first video to chart on the countdown since her debut single Pon de Replay in 2005. On May 1st, 2007 Umbrella debuted on MTV's TRL at #10. By May 9th it had reached the #1 spot.

The video has received over 73 million views on YouTube.[6]

The music video was released in the iTunes store on May 11th, 2007 and reached the #1 position within 24 hours of release.
