Lil Wayne (* 27. September 1982 in New Orleans; eigentlich Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr.) ist ein US-amerikanischer Südstaaten-Rapper.
Pseudonyme
Carter tritt auch unter den Pseudonymen Birdman Junior, Birdman J. R., Lil Weezy, Weezy F. Baby, The Carter, Yung Moola (Baby), Lil Weezy Wee, Best Rapper Alive, Lil Weezy Ana und Young Carter in Erscheinung.
Biografie
Lil Wayne wurde im Alter von 11 Jahren bei dem Südstaaten-Label Cash Money Records von seinem Ziehvater "Baby" aka "Birdman" unter Vertrag genommen. Sechs Jahre später bildete das Label die Hot Boys aus Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile und Turk. Hot Boys veröffentlichten drei Alben: Bereits das erste, "Get It How U Live", war in der HipHop-Szene ein großer Erfolg und verkaufte sich 400.000 Mal. Das darauffolgende Album "Guerilla Warfare" erreichte Platz 5 der US-Albumcharts und hatte mehrfach Platin bekommen. Das dritte Album, "Let 'em Burn", verkaufte sich über 500.000 Mal.
2004 veröffentlichte Lil Wayne das Album "Tha Carter", welches mit der dazugehörigen Single "Go DJ" erschien. Dieses Album machte ihn auch außerhalb des Dirty South bekannt.
2005 wurde er Präsident des Labels Cash Money Records und Young Money Entertainment. Im gleichen Jahr veröffentlichte er das Album Tha Carter II.
Am 10. Juni 2008 erschien sein Soloalbum "Tha Carter III". Die Single "Lollipop" (featuring Static Major) erschien am 30. Mai 2008. Sowohl das Album als auch die Single erreichten Platz 1 der jeweiligen US-Charts. Beide brachten ihm erstmals auch Erfolg im Ausland und konnten sich auch in den europäischen Hitparaden platzieren. Die Beats wurden zum Teil von drei international erfolgreichen Produzenten (Ali, Moe und Carl-O), die unter anderem schon mit Nelly und T.I. arbeiteten, produziert.
