State Route 143, also known as the Brian Head-Panguitch Lake Scenic Byway or Utah's Patchwork Parkway, is a state highway in the U.S. state of Utah. It has been designated as both a Utah Scenic Byway and a Forest Service Byway. At just over Vorlage:Convert long, it connects Parowan to Panguitch, and provides access to Brian Head, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Panguitch Lake. It is also the second-highest paved road in the state at Vorlage:Convert above sea level (behind the Mirror Lake Highway at Vorlage:Convert).[1]

Route description

The route starts as 200 South at the Parowan interchange of I-15 just west of Parowan in Iron County. From here it travels just over Vorlage:Convert east into the center of Parowan and turns north onto Main Street for two blocks. At this point, Main Street continues north as SR-274, while SR-143 turns east again onto Center Street. The route continues east for three more blocks before turning south as it exits the city and follows Parowan Creek up Parowan Canyon. As the route continues to climb the canyon southward, it enters Dixie National Forest and passes through the ski resort of Brian Head. At this point, it finally tops out onto the Markagunt Plateau and passes through the northeast corner of Cedar Breaks National Monument. Here the route takes a turn to the east, while the road continuing south becomes SR-148 (the Cedar Breaks Scenic Highway). The route reaches its highest point here, at Vorlage:Convert above sea level[1] as it exits Cedar Breaks National Monument and begins a long descent to the east and north, crossing into Garfield County. As the route exits Dixie National Forest, it passes by Panguitch Lake, and continues to descend down from the plateau as Panguitch Lake Road, ultimately entering the city of Panguitch from the south as Main Street, and terminating at its intersection with US-89 (Center Street) in the center of town.
