Mathews was born October 25, 1964, in Newport Beach, California, and attended Costa Mesa High School in Costa Mesa, California, where he was known as a punk rocker. He has two brothers. In his teens, he worked at Disneyland and McDonalds, and as a young adult he worked as a model and actor.

Mathews has been arrested several times all over the world in his efforts to protect the rights of animals and create public awareness. In consequence, he is often in the news.

He has been criticized for his comment in concerning Andrew Cunanan, who he named as a man of the 20th century after reading an article about him in an issue of Genre magazine. He stated that Andrew's murder of Gianni Versace "got Versace to stop doing fur." [1][2] [3])

Critical of late conservationist and television personality "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, he stated that "[Irwin] made a career out of antagonizing frightened wild animals, which is a very dangerous message to send to kids," adding, "If you compare him with a responsible conservationist like Jacques Cousteau, he looks like a cheap reality TV star."[1]
