In Deutschland ist Mitsubishi vor allem als Markenname der Mitsubishi Motor Corporation (MMC) für Automobile und Nutzfahrzeuge bekannt. Die Mitsubishi Motor Corporation ist derzeit (1. September 2004) zu 20 Prozent im Besitz des DaimlerChrysler-Konzerns, man geht davon aus, dass DaimlerChrysler diesen Anteil weiter reduzieren will.
Der Aufsichtsrat teilte am Abend des 22. April 2004 mit, dass DaimlerChrysler an der von Mitsubishi geplanten Kapitalerhöhung nicht teilnehmen und das Unternehmen, das DaimlerChrysler zu 37 Prozent gehörte, nicht mehr finanziell unterstützen werde. Die Aktie der Mitsubishi Motor Corporation wurde daraufhin vorübergehend vom Handel ausgesetzt und brach anschließend um 25 Prozent ein, während die Daimler-Aktie um neun Prozent höher stieg. Daraufhin trat am 26. April 2004 Rolf Eckrodt als Vorstandsvorsitzender der Mitsubishi Motor Corporation zurück.
