Donald Pleasence

Donald Pleasence (* 5. Oktober 1919 in Worksop, England; † 2. Februar 1995 in in St. Paul de Vence, Frankreich) war ein britischer Schauspieler.

Pleasence wurde als Sohn eines Bahnhofsvorstehers geboren. Seine Schauspielkarriere begann 1939 auf Jersey mit einer Theateraufführung der Novelle Wuthering Heights von Emily Brontë. 1942 spielt er in seinem ersten Engagement in London in Shakespeares Was ihr wollt. Die Schauspielerlaufbahn wurde durch den Kriegsdienst, obwohl er diesen zunächst verweigerte, als Bomberpilot bei der Royal Air Force unterbrochen. Bei einem Einsatz im Zweiten Weltkrieg gegen Deutschland wurde er über Frankreich abgeschossen und kam für ein Jahr in Kriegsgefangenschaft.

Ein Jahr nach Kriegsende nahm er die Schauspielerei wieder auf. Kritiker nannten ihn den "Mann mit den hypnotischen Augen". Wegen seiner Kahlköpfigkeit, seiner leisen aber ernsten Stimme und "hypnotischen Augen" hatte er sich vielleicht auf Darstellen von geisteskranken und böse Figuren spezialisiert. Seine charakteristische Stimme ist möglicherweise den Rhetorikstunden, die er als Kind hatte, zuzuschreiben.

Mit seiner ersten Frau Miriam Raymond, mit der er von 1941 bis 1958 verheiratet war, hatte Pleasences die Töchter Angela and Jean. Aus seiner Ehe mit der Schauspielerin und Sängerin Josephine Martin Crombie von 1959 bis 1970 gingen die Töchter Lucy und Polly hervor. Während der Ehe mit Meira Shore von 1970 bis 1988 wurde seine Tochter Miranda geboren. Bis zu seinem Tod war er mit seiner vierten Ehefrau Linda verheiratet.

Er starb an den Komplikationen nach einer Herzklappenoperation.
