Friends (engl. Freunde) ist eine der beliebtesten und erfolgreichsten Sitcoms aller Zeiten.
Sie wurde seit 1994 von dem Fernsehsender NBC (USA) produziert. 2004 lief die Serie nach 236 Folgen aus. In Deutschland wird die Serie seit 2000 auf ProSieben ausgestrahlt. Zuvor lief sie ab 1996 auf Sat 1. Die zehnte und letzte Staffel wird am Ende des Jahres ausgestrahlt werden.
Schon kurz nach dem Start war Friends in den USA ein gigantischer Erfolg. Die Darsteller Courteney Cox Arquette, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer und vor allem Jennifer Aniston wurden zu Stars. Zahlreiche Gaststars wirkten in der Serie mit.
Die Serie entwickelte sich über eine reine Sitcom hinaus und wies später viele Soapelemente auf, vor allem in den Beziehungen der Protagonisten zueinander. Auch war es den Drehbuchautoren gelungen, die Charaktere im Laufe der Jahre weiter zu entwickeln. Aufhänger und Angelpunkt der Serie ist das Liebesdrama zwischen Rachel und Ross, das allen denkbaren Entwicklungen einer Fernseh- Serie unterworfen war.
Zur letzten Sendung am 6. Mai 2004 schauten in den USA 51.1 Millionen Menschen zu. Dies ist im Vergleich zur Schlussfolge von M*A*S*H wenig: Diese hatte 105 Millionen Zuschauer. Vor dem Serien-Finale wurde eine Sondersendung auf NBC gebracht: "Dateline" NBC Friends. Nach der Endfolge gab es ebenfalls ein Special: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" Friends. Friends ist somit die 5.-erfolgreichste Serie der USA hinter M*A*S*H, Seinfeld, Cheers und Newhart.
Einer der Darsteller, Matt LeBlanc, führt seit Herbst 2004 (Serienbeginn in den USA: 9. September) in der Spin-Off Serie Joey, in der er weiterhin den Serien-Charakter spielt, einen Teil des Handlungsstranges weiter. Die Sendung läuft in den USA auf dem gleichen Sendeplatz wie "Friends", ein Novum für eine amerikanische Sendung mit dem vorhergehenden Schauspieler der vorhergehenden Sendung.
Übersicht
Die sechs Mitte-Zwanziger Ross, Rachel, Monica, Joey, Phoebe und Chandler treffen sich in New York durch unglückliche Zustände und werden für die nächsten Jahre ein eingeschworener Freundeskreis. Die Handlung beginnt mit Monica und Phoebe, die zusammen in Monicas Apartment wohnen. Chandler Bing wohnt gegenüber und sucht einen neuen Mitbewohner: Joey gewinnt den Kampf um die Wohnung und zieht bei Chandler ein. Ross, Paläontologe und Bruder von Monica, arbeitet im nahen Museum. Rachel war früher einmal die Freundin von Monica, bevor die beiden sich aus den Augen verloren haben. Als Monica jedoch mit ihren Freunden im Central Perk, einem Café in der Nähe ihres Apartments, sitzt, kommt Rachel in einem Brautkleid in das Café und ist total verloren. Sie hat ihren Bräutigam sitzen lassen und möchte ihr Leben nun selbst in die Hände nehmen: Monica hilft ihr dabei.
