Janae Nierah Wherry (born April 15, 1998), known professionally as Sexyy Red, is an American rapper and singer. She first received online attention in 2018, after reworking Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" on her track "Ah Thousand Jugs".[1] In 2022, she collaborated with Summer Walker on the controversial music video "Sense Dat God Gave You".[2] She rose to further prominence with her breakthrough single "Pound Town" (with Tay Keith) in January 2023, which later spawned a remix with Nicki Minaj titled "Pound Town 2", and became her first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Afterwards, she released her second mixtape Hood Hottest Princess (2023), which also included her highest-charting song, "SkeeYee".
Sexyy Red has also appeared on official remixes of "Shake Sumn" by DaBaby,[3] "Slut Me Out" by NLE Choppa,[4] and "Peaches & Eggplants" by Young Nudy, alongside fellow rapper Latto.[5]
Billboard declared her as "one of the biggest breakout artists of summer 2023".[6] She received a nomination for "Best Breakthrough Hip-hop Artist" at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards.
Early life
Wherry grew up in St. Louis County, Missouri. She started rapping when her boyfriend cheated on her and she decided to write a diss song about it. She adopted the stage name "Sexyy Red" because she thinks she is sexy, and her favorite color is Red.[7]
Career
Wherry released her first song "Ah Thousand Jugs" in 2018. In 2021, she released her debut mixtape Ghetto Superstar.[8]
In January 2023, she released "Pound Town" with Tay Keith, which later went viral on social media because of its sexuality.[9] In April, she was featured on the remix of NLE Choppa's "Slut Me Out".[10] In May, she released "Pound Town 2" with Nicki Minaj, which became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. In June, she released the mixtape Hood Hottest Princess.[11] In August 2023, Wherry officially joined Drake on his It's All a Blur Tour as an opening act, having appeared as a guest at previous shows.[12]
Artistry
Wherry has stated that she is inspired by male rappers such as Project Pat, Juicy J, and Gucci Mane. She describes her music as "bad" and "ratchet".[7]
Personal life
Wherry has a son.[7]
In August 2023, Wherry disclosed on a podcast that she was a victim of rape.[13]
In October 2023, during a podcast with Theo Von, Wherry endorsed former U.S. president Donald Trump's 2024 campaign for reelection.[14]
