Beast is a 2022 American survival thriller film directed by Baltasar Kormákur from a screenplay by Ryan Engle, based on a story by Jaime Primak Sullivan. The film stars Idris Elba, Iyana Halley, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Sharlto Copley.

Beast is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 19, 2022, by Universal Pictures.[1]

Premise

A recently widowed husband returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with his two young daughters to a game reserve managed by an old family friend and fellow wildlife biologist. Soon a ferocious wild lion, craving human flesh, begins attacking them and killing anyone in its path.

Production

Development

In September 2020, it was announced that Idris Elba would star in a new Universal Pictures film titled Beast, based on an original idea by Jaime Primak-Sullivan and directed by Baltasar Kormákur.[2] In June 2021, Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley and Leah Sava Jeffries joined the cast.[3]

Filming

Filming commenced on June 1, 2021, in South Africa and lasted for ten weeks. Shooting also occurred in the rural provinces of Limpopo and Northern Cape as well as in Cape Town.[3]

Release

Beast is scheduled to be released on August 19, 2022 by Universal Pictures.[4]

Reception

Box office projection

In the United States and Canada, Beast will be released alongside Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and is projected to gross around $10 million from 3,500 theaters in its opening weekend.[5]

Critical response

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 70% of 44 reviews are positive with an average rating of 6.1/10.[6] Metacritic gave the film a weighted average score of 53 out of 100, based on 20 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[7]
