Cocaine Anonymous, or CA, is a Twelve Step Program to help people suffering from an addiction to cocaine and other mind-altering subtances. As of 2006, there are several thousand local CA groups in the US, Canada and 10 other countries.
CA describes itself as "a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from their addiction." The word "anonymous" in the name signifies that members are not required to give any information about themselves or sign on officially but are required only to show "a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances." They share this attribute with other Twelve Step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Overeaters Anonymous.
CA began in Los Angeles in 1982, and operates in the United States, Canada and several other countries around the world including the U.K., Mexico, Hong Kong, Sweden, Netherlands, France, Spain, South Africa, Denmark and Germany. The basic text for the program is the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, supplemented by "Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions" (12x12) and "Hope, Faith and Courage: Stories from the Fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous," published in 1994.
