Die Weltausstellung, auch Exposition Universelle Internationale, Exposition Mondiale (Expo) oder World's Fair bezeichnet, ist eine internationale Ausstellung, die sich in der Zeit der Industrialisierung als technische und kunsthandwerkliche Leistungsschau etablieren konnte. Die offizielle Institution zur Vergabe der Weltausstellungen ist seit 1928 das Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). Die durch das BIE anerkannten Weltausstellungen dauern 3 bis 6 Monate.
Die erste Weltausstellung wurde auf Anregung Prinz Alberts 1851 im Londoner Hyde Park abgehalten. Dort errichtete Joseph Paxton eigens für die Veranstaltung den Crystal Palace, einen Palast aus Eisen und Glas. Die ersten Ausstellungen vereinigten die Welt unter dem großen Dach eines einzigen Gebäudes. Mit der Ausstellung 1867 in Paris konnte der Platzbedarf jedoch nicht mehr gedeckt werden, wodurch man sich gezwungen sah, weitere ländereigene Pavillons zu errichten. Das Konzept der Länderpavillons hat sich bis heute erhalten. Die Weltausstellungen wurden ein großer Erfolg, da sie die Idee von technischer Faszination mit Amüsement verbanden. Oft wurden Erlebnisparks, Schauarchitekturen und Völkerschauen eingerichtet, die den Weltausstellungen den Charakter von großen Jahrmärkten gaben.

Die Biennale in Venedig und die documenta im hessischen Kassel griffen ebenfalls die Idee der Weltausstellungen auf, sie konzentrieren sich dabei jedoch meistens auf die bildenden Künste.
Die Weltausstellungen standen oft unter einem Thema: so stand sie in Paris unter dem Thema: "Künste und Technik angewendet im modernen Leben" und in Brüssel hieß es eher kritisch "Dieser Welt das Menschliche zurückgeben".
Die letzte Weltausstellung in Deutschland war die Expo 2000 in Hannover.
Zuletzt fand die Expo 2005 in Japan statt, die am 25. März 2005 eröffnet wurde und ihre Tore am 25. September 2005 schloss. Die nächste Weltausstellung findet 2008 in Saragossa, Spanien statt.

Die 6. Landesaustellung der Schweiz 2002 war trotz ihrer Bezeichung Expo '02 keine Weltausstellung. Sie fand in Biel, Neuenburg, Murten, Yverdon, Schweiz statt.
