Sail Training

In 1999 Ocean Youth Trust Scotland placed an order with Oyster to build their first, and only, custom built vessel- Alba Venturer. Venturer was also to be Oyster's first sail training vessel and first Ketch (a yacht with a two masted rig). At 70ft long, she is only 2ft shorter than Alba Explorer, an ex around-the-world racing yacht. Alba Venturer (sail no. OYTS1) is the Trust's flagship vessel and in the Autumn - Spring season is based on the Clyde at James Watt Dock Marina. In the summer she is based at Oban Marina on Kerrera. both OYTS vessels (Venturer and Explorer) are a regular sight in the Clyde, Kintyre and Hebrides.

History

The company was established in 1973 in Ipswich by Richard Matthews. In 1978, Oyster Marine introduced a 46-foot cruiser-racer designed by Kim Holman & Donald Pye which pioneered the "deck saloon" feature that has since become the company's trademark.[2] In 1997, they launched a 53-foot design by Rob Humphreys and in 2002 a 62-foot Robert Humphreys' design.[2] Oyster Marine currently builds sailboats from 47ft to 118ft, all designed by Robert Humphreys, and promotes 100ft and 125ft yachts designed by Edward George Dubois and built at RMK Marine in Turkey.[3]

The company was acquired by Balmoral Capital in 2008 and by HTP Investments in 2012. The company was featured in the American series Building the Brand in 2011.[4]

Awards

The company has twice been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise. In 2012 the Oyster 625 was named the Luxury Cruiser of the Year at the Düsseldorf Boatshow[5] and the Oyster 100-01 was given the Judge's Commendation for yachts under 40m at the World Superyacht Awards in Istanbul.[6]
