The Chase (Großbritannien)

Vorlage:Unreferenced Vorlage:Infobox television The Chase is a British game show, broadcast on the ITV Network and ITV1 HD. It is hosted by Bradley Walsh. The chasers were Mark Labbett and Shaun Wallace in series 1, with Anne Hegerty joining the other two in the second series.

The chasers are all well established quiz players with impressive reputations. Wallace is a past BBC TV Mastermind winner and Hegerty and Labbett are participants on the UK 'Grand Prix' quiz circuit. Hegerty is currently ranked among the Top 20 of the UK's quiz players (as at 23 November 2010) and holds the rank of 'Master' (one step below 'Grand Master') in the UK 'Order of Merit'. Labbett is ranked 55th and holds the rank of 'Sage' (two ranks below 'Master'). While Labbett appears to have withdrawn from international competition (he was last capped for Wales in 2007), Hegerty was twice capped for Scotland during the recent European Quizzing Championships, playing against Holland and Estonia (November 2010).

Format

A team of 4 contestants attempt to amass as much money as possible for a team pot, but there is one person standing in their way, a ruthless quiz genius known as The Chaser. It's their job to catch the team and make sure the players lose the money and leave with nothing.

Each player is given 1 minute to answer as many questions as possible with each correct answer worth £1,000. After the minute is up, the player's money is placed 3 steps down on an 8-step money board. The player may remain at this step and play for the money they have won, but if they so wish, they can be placed 1 step lower down the board for a smaller award at the discretion of The Chaser, or they can be placed 1 step further up the board for a greater award, again, at the discretion of The Chaser. Once the player nominates their starting position, they must answer questions correctly in order to reach the bottom of the board (known as 'getting home') and bank their money. Both the player and The Chaser are given the same multiple-choice question with 3 possible answers. When one person locks in their answer, the other is given 5 seconds to lock in their answer. If the player and/or The Chaser is correct, they move 1 step down the board, but if wrong, they must remain where they are. The Chaser's job is to catch up to the player and eliminate them from the game before they can reach the bottom of the board. If this happens, the player is out of the game and the cash disappears, but if the player reaches home, their money is put into the team's prize pot which will be contested for in the final round. This is repeated for all 4 players.

• If the player elects to play for the higher reward, The Chaser is 2 steps behind them and the player must answer 6 questions correctly to reach home.
• If the player elects to remain where they are, The Chaser is 3 steps behind them and the player must answer 5 questions correctly to reach home.
• If the player elects to play for the smaller reward, The Chaser is 4 steps behind them and the player must answer 4 questions correctly to reach home.

In the final round, called The Final Chase, the remaining players answer as many questions as possible in 2 minutes to amass as many spaces as possible. To start with, they are given 1 space per remaining member of the team (for example, if there is only 1 player left, that player starts with 1 step, 2 steps for 2 players remaining, 3 steps for 3 players remaining and 4 steps for all 4 players remaining). After the 2 minutes are up, The Chaser is brought in and is told how many spaces the players collected. The Chaser is given a further 2 minutes of quick-fire questions to attempt to catch the team. If The Chaser gets any question wrong or can't answer any question, the clock is stopped and the question is thrown over to the players. If they get the answer correct, The Chaser is pushed back 1 step and the clock is resumed. If The Chaser succeeds in catching the team, they lose the prize pot and leave empty-handed, but if the Chaser is not able to catch the team, the prize pot is split equally between the remaining team players.

On the seventh episode of the first series, broadcast on 7 July 2009, and the fifth episode of the third series, broadcast on 7 January 2011, The Chaser managed to catch all 4 of the players. In this situation, all 4 players are brought back and must nominate one of the players to go against The Chaser in The Final Chase. The game plays as normal with the player attempting to put as much distance between themselves and The Chaser as possible, and The Chaser attempting to catch the player. If the player manages to evade The Chaser, the team goes away with £1,000 each.
