The story was originally conceived by Jun Maeda, who also wrote the screenplay, with original character design by Na-Ga; both Maeda and Na-Ga are from the visual novel brand Key, who produced such titles as Kanon, Air, and Clannad. The anime will premiere in July 2015. A manga adaptation illustrated by Haruka Komowata began serialization in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki G's Comic.

Plot

In an alternate world, a small percentage of children are able to manifest superpowers upon reaching puberty. The story is set at the Hoshinoumi Academy and follows members of the student council as they help other students with problems arising from their abilities. Yū Otosaka uses his power without others knowing, and lives a fairly normal, average school life. However, after he meets a mysterious girl named Nao Tomori, the fate of special power-users will be exposed.

Yū is a first-year student at Hoshinoumi Academy and is the protagonist of Charlotte. He is rude and bad at studying. He usually behaves as if he were smart, but he is actually a chronic cheater. He says things which sound clever, and he is a narcissist. He has the ability to take over another person's body for five seconds.

Nao is a first-year student and also the student council president of Hoshinoumi Academy. She is hardworking, but is also narcissistic. She has the ability to make herself disappear, but this is limited to one person of her choosing at a time. She is a huge fan of the band Zhiend.

Jōjirō is a first-year student and a member of the student council. He can move at very fast speeds to make it appear as if he is teleporting, but he is not able to totally control where he stops, resulting in him being hospitalized. To counteract this, he has to wear protective gear under his school uniform.

Ayumi is a first-year student and who is the vocalist for the band How-Low-Hello. She is a medium able to speak to the dead. She uncontrollably channels her dead older sister Misa, who occasionally possesses her. When this occurs, her appearance changes, such as her eye color turning from blue to red.

Broadcast and distribution

The Charlotte anime television series is directed by Yoshiyuki Asai and produced by P.A.Works and Aniplex.[1][2][3] It will premiere in Japan in July 2015. The screenplay is written by Jun Maeda, who originally conceived the series. The art director is Kazuki Higashiji, and Kanami Sekiguchi based the character design used in the anime on Na-Ga's original designs. Sound and music direction is headed by Satoki Iida.[3]

A four-panel comic strip manga, illustrated by Haruka Komowata and titled Vorlage:Nihongo, began serialization in the May 2015 issue of ASCII Media Works' Dengeki G's Comic sold on March 30, 2015.[4]
