God Particle is an upcoming 2017 American science-fiction horror film directed by Julius Onah, written by Oren Uziel and Doug Jung and produced by J. J. Abrams. It is the third installment in the Cloverfield franchise.[1] It is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on February 23, 2018.[2]

Plot

A team of astronauts aboard a space station find themselves alone after a scientific experiment causes Earth to disappear. When a space shuttle appears, the space station crew must fight for survival following their horrible discovery.

Cast

Production

The film was first announced in 2012 although the closure of Paramount's InSurge label put the film's release in jeopardy.[3] The first hints that the film was connected to the Cloverfield brand came when a piece of the viral marketing for 10 Cloverfield Lane included a soundclip that was supposedly from the International Space Station.[4]

On March 29, 2016, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo were confirmed to be cast in the film.[5] On April 12, 2016, Variety reported that John Krasinski was in early talks to join the film to play one of the astronauts,[6] but his casting was unclear because of his commitment with a television series.[7] On May 5, 2016, Elizabeth Debicki was cast in the film also to play one of the astronauts,[7] and following her on May 10, 2016, Daniel Brühl also joined the film.[8] Chris O'Dowd and Zhang Ziyi were added to the cast on May 26, 2016.[9] The following day, May 27, 2016, John Ortiz and Aksel Hennie joined the film.[10] Cinematographer Dan Mindel was confirmed to join the film from his résumé.[11]

Filming began on June 10, 2016.[10]

Release

God Particle was originally scheduled for a February 24, 2017 release but in late 2016 it was moved to October 27, 2017 to give more time for post production.[12] The film was scheduled to be released in the IMAX format, but the IMAX release was reported in December 2016 to have been cancelled, though an unnamed Cloverfield film is scheduled for release in IMAX.[13] Some have speculated that the unnamed Cloverfield film and God Particle are, in fact, the same film.[13][14]

On January 28, 2017, it was pushed back to February 23, 2018, most likely to avoid competition with Saw: Legacy
