The term Ethnoreligious refers to a group or groups of people unified by a common religious culture but who display the distinct characteristics of an ethnic group. Ethnoreligious communities define their identity neither exclusivly by ancestral heritage nor simply religious affilation.
An example which many people are familiar with are the Jewish People, with converts and non-religious secularists both being included in the broader definition Jews. Other, less known examples of groups which combine ethnicity with religion may include the Samaritans, the Druze, the Yazidi and the Mandaeans.
