A hostage situation occurred on 15 December 2014, in Martin Place of Sydney, Australia. At least thirteen people were taken hostage in a Lindt Chocolat Café by at least one gunman.[1][2]
The hostages were seen holding up the black flag of Islam (shahada).[3]
Motives and demands
According to Sydney 2GB radio announcer, Ray Hadley, the gunmen has demanded to speak to the Prime Minister live on radio.[4]
Evacuations
The Sydney Opera House has been evacuated after a suspicious package was found.[5] The local U.S. consulate was also evacuated.
Reactions
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott convened The National Security Committee of Cabinet to give briefings on the situation.[6][3] Abbott's public statement reassured Australian citizens stating "Australians should be reassured that our law enforcement and security agencies are well trained and equipped and are responding in a thorough and professional manner."<ref=sunshinelindt1/>
Evacuations
