Francisco Varela (* 7. September 1946 in Santiago de Chile; † 28. Mai 2001 in Paris) war ein chilenischer Biologe und Neurowissenschaftler, der, zusammen mit Humberto Maturana, vor allem für die Einführung des Konzepts der Autopoiese und die Begründung des radikalen Konstruktivismus' bekannt wurde.
Seine Tochter ist die Schauspielerin Leonor Varela.
Francisco Varela war einer der Hauptbegründer des Mind and Life-Institute.
Unter dem Titel "Monte Grande - What is Life?" schuf Franz Reichle einen Dokumentarfilm über Leben und Werk Varelas, Wissenschaft und Buddhismus. In dem Film kommen neben Varela selbst auch zahlreiche seiner Kollegen und Freunde zu Wort, u. a. der Dalai Lama, Heinz von Foerster, Evan Thompson, Anne Harrington und Humberto Maturana.
