The Les Humphries Singers

Die Les Humphries Singers waren eine von dem in Hamburg lebenden Engländer Les Humphries (*1940) im Jahre 1970 gegründetete Gesangsgruppe, die, neben ihrer musikalischen Leistung, durch die große Zahl ihrer Sänger verschiedenster ethnischer Herkunft auffiel.

Die Les Humphries Singer brachten damals etwas vom Flair der Hippiebewegung in die Schlagerwelt. 1976 vertraten sie Deutschland beim Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson mit dem von Ralph Siegel geschriebenen Titel Sing Sang Song, der es aber nur auf Platz 15 (von 18 Teilnehmern) schaffte. Andere Hits, bei denen sich Humphries oftmals Texten von Gospels bediente, waren weitaus erfolgreicher und repräsentierten den typischen "70er-Jahre-Partysound"

Ein Beispiel hierfür ist der Hit 'Mexico', der im Original "Battle Of New Orleans" hieß und ein Country-Hit von Johnny Horton aus dem Jahr 1960 war.

Interessant dürfte noch sein, dass Jürgen Drews dieser Gruppe angehörte, bevor er 1976 mit "Ein Bett im Kornfeld" den Durchbruch als Solokünstler schaffte. Außerdem waren Leslie Mandoki und Inga Rumpf dabei, die heute ebenfalls als Solokünstler und Produzenten arbeiten, ebenso wie Liz Mitchell, die spätere Frontfrau von Boney M.. Ebenso war John Lawton mit von der Partie, der später als Frontmann bei Uriah Heep bekannt wurde und mit dieser Band einen großen Erfolg mit dem Song Free Me hatte.

Ende der 70er Jahre lösten sich die Singers auf, nachdem sich Humphries aufgrund von Steuerschulden in seine englische Heimat abgesetzt hatte.
