Suits, formerly known as A Legal Mind, is a USA Network television comedy-drama series starring Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams. It debuted on June 23, 2011, with a 90-minute premiere episode.[1][2]
Premise
Michael 'Mike' Ross (Patrick J. Adams) is a brilliant college dropout who made some bad decisions with an eidetic memory that has allowed him to pass the bar exam without attending law school. Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), one of Manhattan's best lawyers, takes a gamble and hires Mike as his new associate. Because of the firm's policy of hiring only Harvard Law graduates, Harvey and Mike are forced to pretend that Mike has gone to Harvard. Unlike the veteran Harvey, Mike empathizes with his clients.

Development and production
Suits first appeared on USA network's development slate under the title A Legal Mind in April 2010.[3] In May, the network placed a cast-contingent pilot order from a pilot script written by Aaron Korsh.[4] Patrick J. Adams was cast in the lead role of Mike Ross in July 2010.[5] In late July, Gabriel Macht joined the cast as Harvey Specter, the attorney who hires Mike.[6] Rick Hoffman came on board in mid-August to portray Harvey's competition at the law firm.[7] Meghan Markle and Gina Torres completed the main cast in late August.[8] Torres was cast as Jessica Pearson, the managing partner at the firm, and Markle portrays Rachel Zane, a paralegal who has an encyclopedic knowledge of the law. The pilot was filmed in New York City in fall 2010.[9][10]
The network green-lighted the series with a 12-episode order on January 19, 2011.[11]
Reception
Suits received a score of 60 on Metacritic, indicating mixed or average reviews.[12] Ginia Bellafante, a critic for the The New York Times, gave the pilot a positive review: "A new legal series beginning on Thursday on USA, erupts from a Mount Vesuvius of absurdities, and yet like so much else in the USA stable, it comes in relatively good faith — not merely with a snappy sense of its own fun, but also with a chipper belief in the viability of renewal."[13] In a review in the The Miami Herald, Glenn Garvin referred to the the show as "cuttingly funny".[14] BuddyTV described Suits as "an excellent summer show and - more than that - a truly high-quality piece of television.[15]
