The uses the same beat as "Impatient" from will.i.am's album Songs About Girls, and this song itself is also produced by will.i.am.

Chart performance
The single charted inside the UK Top 75 based only on the live version released on UK iTunes for 3 days. The single entered the UK Singles Chart at #1 on the chart dated 23 March 2008 and since then has charted four weeks at number one. The single has also charted on the Irish Singles Chart the same week where it entered at #8 on downloads and peaked at #2. American Boy has so far peaked at #6 in New Zealand and on the Lithuanian Airplay Chart
On March 17, the song climbed to Number 1 on the UK iTunes chart, due to extensive radio plays. The single has already become her most successful in the United States, and is currently number 5 on Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles.
