Appearance

Godey's Lady's Book was a 19th-century women's magazine. It was published by Louis Godey. It began publication in 1830 as The Lady's Book with "Godey's" added to the title about 1840. It was also known as Godey's Magazine.
Contents included recipes, health advice, fiction, poetry, fashions, household tips, moral instruction, etc. The magazine was absorbed by The Puritan in 1898. Sarah Josepha Hale was literary editor.
The monthly fashion plates were hand-colored by 150 women. Southern subscriptions dropped off during the American Civil War, though the magazine was careful not to make any mention of politics or the war.
