A web application is a software application on a web page. Web applications are usually on the Internet. Some others are used on intranets (smaller, private networks) in companies and schools. Web applications are different from other software because they run in a user's web browser. They do not need to be installed (saved to the user's computer).

Some example web applications are: Facebook (social networking), Flickr (photo sharing), Mibbit (chatting), and Wikipedia.

Web applications are popular because most computer operating systems have web browsers. Programmers can easily change a web application. Users do not need to install any new software to see these changes.
