Building code is a set of regulations on a building design, construction, testing, inspections, and maintenance to protect public health, safety and welfare.

Different building codes may differ considerably. Seismic design, e.g., is based on procedures meant to safeguard structures subject to earthquake impact [1]. However, a design which blindly follows seismic code regulations does not guarantee safety against collapse or serious damage [1].
