열대부리고래는 열대병코고래속(Indopacetus)에 속하는 고래이다. 인도태평양부리고래 또는 롱먼부리고래로 불리기도 한다. 최근까지 세계에서 가장 희귀한 고래로 간주해 왔지만, 이제는 그 자리를 스페이드이빨고래가 차지하고 있다. 2010년 현재까지, 10여 곳에서 65번 이상 목격된 것으로 알려져 있다.[2]
