The initial language of this article was Vietnamese. Also needs to be rewritten, because it was taken fro the Vietnamese wikipedia page on poetry. So it contains material about poetry in general, as well as some stuff about the Vietnamese language, which is relevant but needs to be addressed to an English-speaking audience. The initial language of this article was Hindi. Article is nominally English, but is so laced with Hindi terms that an English speaker can't make heads or tails of it. Needs someone who can translate Hindi religious terms into something people outside of India can understand. ⌘macwhiz (talk) 01:56, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

The non-English words were a mix of Sanskrit and Malayalam, the language of Kerala state in Southern India, where the temple is located. I've translated most of the Sanskrit terms (as they are close to Hindi), but the Malayalam ones remain. Proper translation/rewrite can be done by one who is familiar with Kerala culture and temple rituals, and very likely any Dravidian culture. Have removed Hindi tag and added Malayalam.VishalB (talk) 10:55, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Coming to it belatedly. He doesn't have an article on VN Wikipedia, though he is mentioned in some articles there. I think it is because he is now a retired footballer (soccer player). Therefore this text could be copied from somewhere else and machine translated, in which case copyvio. Is the best solution to prod? The machine translation is so poor that it is hard to clean it up without reference to the original. Itsmejudith (talk) 15:29, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
It's already been prodded for that reason and declined by the poster, so it would have to be afd, but that might be for the best, its not likely to be made intelligible any time soon--Jac16888 Talk 15:35, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

(moved from Cruel Thursday of abundance) Machine translation of the equivalent Italian WP article. Someone with dual fluency should check this out. Constantine 23:15, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

The title has no English language Ghits so is probably one of the coolest artifacts of machine translation ever. Jonathanwallace (talk) 03:16, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Try "Fat Thursday" which is the normal translation of "giovedì grasso". A bit like Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday. "Bloody Fat Thursday" is an idiomatic translation of the title, but no ghits there either. (Doesn't have the right sound in English; English speakers don't celebrate it usually anyway.) "Black" would do too, but only one ghit (irrelevant anyway). Peridon (talk) 17:45, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Just checked my favourite translator - it gives "Cruel Thursday fat". Google very creatively gives "Cruel Shrove Tuesday" [sic] without any real justification. Aren't computers fun? Peridon (talk) 17:51, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
No knowledge of Italian here, but would "Bloody Carnival" be a reasonable expression of the underlying thought, I wonder? Textorus (talk) 20:59, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Looking at Google Books results, the English names include "Friulan Revolt of 1511" (The peasantries of Europe by Tom Scott), "Cruel Carnival" (Ritual in early modern Europe by Edward Muir), or "Udine carnival massacre of 1511" (Mad blood stirring, another by Edward Muir). Xanthoxyl < 21:12, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
I'd go for Friulan Revolt of 1511 - it's descriptive. We could have a redirect from Udine carnival massacre as well. (And please keep Cruel Thursday of abundance as a redirect....) Peridon (talk) 18:06, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
I agree with Peridon, in this case; "Giovedì grasso", in Italian, means "Fat Thursday", even though it's the first time I hear of it... In this case, a literal translation would be "Cruel Fat Thursday", I'd go for Fat Thursday uprising, although this is far less witty than the original machine translation, but if we have to follow WP:COMMONAME, then I'd say Friulan Revolt of 1511 is the best option... Salvio Let's talk about it! 18:41, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
I've moved it to the new title above, left the original as a redirect and also redirected from Salvio's Fat Thursday uprising. Actually, I meant to move it to 'Friulian' but copied my typo instead. Will check with Salvio. Peridon (talk) 20:51, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

April 2011

The initial language of this article was French. mostly translated, but not completely, and several awkward terms were not translated or mistranslated or maltranslated (weird grammar) or use a meaning that is not the astronomical one that should be used 65.93.12.101 (talk) 11:57, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

On a quick look: Much awkward phrasing but seems to lack the total gibberish associated with machine translation. A lot of this could be fixed by a copy editor with astronomy knowledge who doesn't have French. I will also take a look when I can, but am not an astronomer so may not be able to fix some of the problems. Jonathanwallace (talk) 11:33, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

The initial language of this article was Italian. This reads like a poor translation, or at least writing by somone who was not fluent in English. PatGallacher (talk) 19:09, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

The initial language of this article was Japanese. My rough translation of this article was deleted by User:Jac16888 per "machine translations are not acceptable." However, I thought that this was the point of the "Rough translation" template: to state that the content "may have been generated by a computer or by a translator without dual proficiency. Please help to enhance the translation." I have reversed this deletion. It's not like I copied/pasted directly from Google; in fact, I did quite a bit of research before I posted the final product. A fluent Japanese speaker should be able to verify that the content is the same as the Japanese article, with several sentences removed. --SweetNightmares (talk) 03:39, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

You're wrong. The rough translation template is for people who are too lazy to find and read វិគីភីឌា:Translation#How to translate. Adding a machine translation does not help anybody--Jac16888Talk 03:44, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
Blah, blah, blah, ad hominem? While I do understand that the "Wikipedia consensus is that an unedited machine translation, left as a Wikipedia article, is worse than nothing," I would like to point out that the translation is not unedited. I still recognize that the article needs some attention from a fluent Japanese speaker, which is why I tagged it here. Could I please have someone else's opinion? --SweetNightmares (talk) 03:52, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
Machine translations can be very helpful when they are clear enough to deliver a complete article after a bit of editing, but posting an article that still needs cleanup after editing a machine translation is in fact not the way to go. WP:Translation exists for a reason. De728631 (talk) 20:57, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
Do you believe the article to be sub-par? Personally, I think it reads fine... but maybe I'm biased. --SweetNightmares (talk) 03:46, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Probably notable, no longer living French poster artist, in a bad machine translation. I will work on this when I get a chance, but will probably also stub it in the process if no-one else wants to give the whole lengthy article an effort. Jonathanwallace (talk) 11:30, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Bility, WP:TRANSLATION is the proper way to have articles translated from other Wikipedias, using a machine translation doesn't help anyone, it just makes things worse--Jac16888 Talk 15:00, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm assuming its a machine translation because of phrases like "He accompanied the mutation carriers at the turn of the century", but don't know for sure. Jonathanwallace (talk) 15:04, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
The original appears to be http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Goursat where it makes much more sense. I might get to have a go too - it's much easier with the original to hand... Looks to be as notable as Spy (otherwise Leslie Ward). Peridon (talk) 13:55, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

I've raised this issue of articles created in this way here--Jac16888 Talk 02:32, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
This specific article has been deleted from the Hungarian wikipedia for lacking notability. It's just an elementary school in a small village in Hungary. There are about 85 children spread across 8 grades attending this school, in a village of less than a thousand. On the Hungarian wikipedia, it was decided to merge the content into the page for that village. It was named for someone famous, but then, almost all schools are named in this fashion. In the year that the page was up on the Hungarian wikipedia, nothing was added by anyone to the article to suggest that this particular elementary school had anything to distinguish it from the countless other village elementary schools throughout the country. • I'm re-translating from the original, and also tightening a little, but I think this goes on at insane length over one person's scandalous report, quoting at extensive length. Basically, what we have here is a previously bad translation from es-wiki, still bad in parts, and which entirely leaves out the material in es-wiki that is at all favorable to the Ceibal program. - Jmabel | Talk 05:55, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
  • I've re-translated that section, but I think the article still needs more work even just in terms of 'Englishing' and that it's a hatchet job. For example, "Some of the social, emotional and psychological diseases what students can suffer are the Internet addiction disorder (IAD), Social isolation, weak interpersonal relationships, lack of motivation and self-discipline, emotional detachment from the community and commercial exploitation," has nothing to do with Plan Ceibal as such, it's general issues about the downside of using computers, and it seems very inappropriate to tack it onto this article. - Jmabel | Talk 04:46, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
