Fortran machine-independence?

The 1st Fortran was targeted to the IBM 704 computer; that Fortran language included statements specific to the 704. There was no machine-independece goal in the intital design of Fortran. That would have come later, and when it did it was for all languages -- Fortran has no special place re machine-independence. So I deleted that text. Rwwww 07:47, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
