Flow Coefficient

Pressure losses in turbulent flow are approximately proportional to the square of flow velocity. A loss coefficient for a pipe, passage or a component is defined [1] as-


where (using SI units):

= loss coefficient (unitless),
= change in total pressure in pascals,
= fluid density in kg/m3 (e.g. density of air),
= fluid velocity in m/s.


A system loss coefficient is defined as the non-dimensional ratio of the total pressure difference when the real component is installed to the total pressure different when there is a zero-loss component. The Pressure Loss is non-dimensionalized by the component's inlet or exit Dynamic Pressure
