A Virtual Organization Cluster (VOC) is a dynamically provisioned computing cluster that has virtual machines as its compute nodes. The virtual machines that form the Virtual Organization Cluster may run on sites in a grid computing system, or they may be hosted by a cloud computing service provider.[1] Virtual Organization Clusters can be implemented using a wide variety of technologies, including different virtualization systems, different job schedulers, and different operating systems. However, all implementations must adhere to a set of architectural specifications known as the Virtual Organization Cluster Model.[2] Implemented clusters grow or shrink in response to changing workload demands, using an autonomic management application known as a "watchdog daemon". Each VOC implementation uses a watchdog daemon to monitor the virtual cluster's job scheduler queue and start or stop virtual machines in response to changing queue sizes.[3]
