Minimal lead

The original lead was simply: "Cryptography was used extensively during World War II, with a plethora of code and cipher systems fielded by the nations involved." Extending this has involved making judgements which could be said to violate Wikipedia:Neutral point of view and is at present unsourced. Given that this article is essentially a useful list of links to other articles, might it not be better to revert to the original single-sentence lead?--TedColes (talk) 07:28, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
