Literary allusions

In John le Carre's A Perfect Spy, an edition of Simplicissimus is used as a book cipher by which the spy Magnus Pym decodes messages from his Czech controller. The character of Simplicissimus symbolises Pym himself, whose entire life revolves around betrayal.
