Unclear statements

The section Definition begins as follows:

"Let F be a totally real number field of degree m over the rational field. Let be the real embeddings of F. Through them we have a map

Let be the ring of integers of F. The group is called the full Hilbert modular group. For every element , there is a group action of defined by "

Some problems:

1. The map is never explained clearly; there is never any good reason for omitting the important part of a definition,

2. The notation is never defined. Is this supposed to mean the upper half plane, or in other words the hyperbolic plane? Then the article should use a word or two to say so.
