ATS Automation Tooling Systems is a Cambridge, Ontario based Canadian company that designs and builds factory automation systems. It is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

History

ATS was founded by Klaus Woerner in 1978.[3] Woerner, who immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1974, ran the company until his death in 2005, overseeing significant growth.[4] In 2007, ATS pulled the planned IPO of its solar division, Photowatt.[5] Partially as a result of this, two hedge funds, Goodwood and Mason Capital Management, led a proxy fight against the firm, leading to the a new board of directors and management team.[6] Anthony Caputo became CEO at this time.[7] Photowatt under-performed significantly in the years that followed;[6] the company eventually sold Photowatt's French operations to EDF Group.[8]

In 2011, ATS purchased Sortimat Group, a German life sciences automation firm, for $62 million.[6] In 2013, they purchased German packaging firm IWK for $144 million,[9] and in 2014, they purchased the automation business of German company M+W Group for $362 million.[10]

In February 2017, Andrew Hider is appointed CEO. [11]

In February 2019, ATS completed the acquisition of Comecer S.p.A, a leader in the design, engineering, manufacture, and servicing of advanced aseptic containment and processing systems for the nuclear medicine and pharmaceutical industries. [15]

April 2019, ATS Introduced ILLUMINATE™ Manufacturing Intelligence, a next-generation factory optimization Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform solution. [16]

In September 2019, ATS acquired iXLOG Unternehmensberatung GmbH ( “iXLOG”), a Germany-based IT consulting and service provider specializing in business process optimization, business intelligence and analytics. The addition of iXLOG is highly complementary to ATS’ Process Automation Solutions (“PA”) business. [17]

In December 2019, ATS acquired MARCO Limited (“MARCO”), a provider of yield control and recipe formulation systems to help customers in the food, nutraceuticals and cosmetics sectors increase productivity and meet stringent industry regulations. [18]
