Date and time notation in Nepal

YYYY-MM-DD is official date format for the Vikram Samvat Calender used in Nepal. An example of Vikram Samvat YYYY-MM-DD usage used is the online news portal Onlinekhabar.[1] When using the Gregorian calendar, both YYYY-MM-DD (2025-07-26) and DD-MM-YY (26/07/2025) format can be used. While the DMY format (26 July 2025) is used when writing full Gregorian dates, the MDY format (July 26, 2025) is also acceptable. The DD-MM-YY is the predominant short form of the numeric date usage. Almost all government documents need to be filled up in the YYYY-MM-DD format. An example of YYYY-MM-DD usage is the passport application form.[2]

Time
The 12-hour notation (2:32 pm) is widely used in daily life, written communication, and is used in spoken language. The 24-hour notation (14:32) is used only in rare situations where there would be widespread ambiguity. Examples plane departure and landing timings. A colon is widely used to separate hours, minutes and seconds (e.g., 08:00:20).
