While combining/merging this open box testing article with white box testing is plausible it would negate one of the primary reasons and benefits of making the distinction:

The pivot away from "white box" and "black box" is both an attempt to provide a more practical description of this software testing discipline and an intentional departure from the racial connotations of those two terms.

The author of this open box testing article is attempting to address terminology that he believes is unhealthy and completely unnecessary. This change in terminology is a considerably more demonstrable and illustratable foundation to build racially neutral dialog upon.
