The Ofqual exam results algorithm was produced in 2020 by Ofqual designed to combat grade inflation to combat grade inflation, [1] It was applied to the A level and GCSE candidates in 2020, as formal examinations had been cancelled as part of the Corvid-19 lockdown measures.

The algorithm

The examination centre provided a list of teacher predicted grades. (Centre assessed grades, CAGs)
The students were listed in order.
For large cohorts
With exams with a large cohort; the previous results of the centre were consulted. For each previous year, the number of students getting each grade (A to U) is noted. A percentage average is taken.
This distribution is then applied to the current years students-irrespective of their individual CAG.
For small schools, and minority interest exams.
The individual CAG is used unchanged [2]
