Area code 914

Area code 914 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for Westchester County, New York.
914 was among the first area codes announced during October 1947.[1] It was originally assigned to Delaware, Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties, an area largely coextensive with the New York state portion of the New York metropolitan area, excluding New York City itself which received area code 212. In 1951, Nassau and Suffolk counties were separated from the rest, receiving their own area code 516,[1][2].
This configuration remained for 49 years. However, by the end of the millennium, 914 was becoming depleted due to the increasing demand for cell phones and Internet dial-up connections. The supply of numbers was limited further because the entire New York state portion of the New York metropolitan area (including New York City) is a single Local access and transport area(LATA).[3]
As a result, 914 was truncated to Westchester County on June 5, 2000. The remainder of the area was assigned the new area code 845. Area code 914 was retained by all cellphones in use in the 914 area before the division.[2]
