The Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) is a central IT service unit of the Max Planck Society. The purpose of the MPDL is it to support scientists from all 86[1] Max Planck Institutes with various research-oriented services. The services range from research data management, different publication services to general scientific information supply.[2] Therefore, the MPDL is providing scientists within the Max Planck Society with access to scientific information, to provide a sustainable infrastructure for scientific information management. Also, the MPDL is supporting the MPG in its Open Access policy.[3]
MDPL and its previous organizations have been among the largest recipients of scientific information in Europe. It allows access to a broad spectrum of e-books, scientific journals, open access publication services and specialist databases. Also the MPDL supports the libraries of all Max Planck institutes.[4]
Hence, the MPDL is not a library in the conventional sense, but rather a service infrastructure with the purpose to contribute to the competitiveness of the Max Planck Society in international science.
