Area code 914

Area code 914 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for Westchester County, New York.
914 was among the first area codes announced in October 1947.[1] It was originally assigned to an area largely coextensive with the New York state portion of the New York metropolitan area, excluding New York City itself, which received area code 212. Originally, 914 covered Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan and Delaware counties–an area largely coextensive with the New York state portion of the New . In 1951, Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk) split off as area code 516,[1][2] and 914 was reduced to serve the lower Hudson Valley.
This configuration remained in place for 49 years. However, by the turn of the millennium, 914 was on the brink of exhaustion due to the growing demand for cell phones and Internet dial-up connections. The supply of numbers was further limited because the entire New York state portion of the New York metropolitan area (the Five Boroughs, the lower Hudson and Long Island) is a single LATA.[3]
As a result, 914 was truncated to Westchester County on June 5, 2000. The rest of the lower Hudson Valley was split into the new area code 845. Area code 914 was retained by all cell phones in use in the lower Hudson before the split.[2]
