Andrew Scott Bell (born 21 February 1966) is an Australian judge who is the current President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal.[1][2][3]
Bell is the son of economist Harold Bell and art historian Pamela Bell, and received his secondary education at Sydney Grammar School, where he captained the school cricket team.[4] Bell graduated with a Bachelor of Laws with honours in 1989[1]. He was also a medallist in Economic History and Law at the University of Sydney (where he was a resident from 1985 to 1989 at St Paul's College[5]). He became a member of the College Council in 2004, and continued to serve as a member until 2013[5]. He also served as Deputy Chairman between 2010 to 2013[5]. In 1990, was a Rhodes Scholar.[citation needed] He graduated from Oxford and was awarded the Vinerian Scholarship for first place in the BCL.[citation needed] The following year he earned his doctorate from Oxford University [5].
In 1990-1991, Bell was the Associate to the then Chief Justice of the High Court, Anthony Mason. It was there he met his wife, Joanna Bird, the Associate to Justice Michael McHugh.[4] He was admitted as a barrister in 1995 and took silk in 2006 as a Senior Counsel[5]. He was a Treasurer and then Senior Vice President of the New South Wales Bar Association.[6] He was also a senior vice president of the NSW Bar Association, and a past chairman of the Professional Conduct Committee of that Association [2].
He was twice the chairman of his chambers, Eleven Wentworth Chambers[2] and also an adjunct Professor of Law at Sydney University for over a decade[2].
Bell was appointed as President of the NSW Court of Appeal on 28 February 2019.[7]
