The 2006 Abule Egba pipeline explosion is a disaster that occured in the heavily populated neighborhood of Abule Egba in Lagos, Nigeria on December 26, 2006. The incident occured after an elevated gasoline pipeline raptured earlier at midnight (local time), attracting scavangers who collected the fuel using plastic containers, before the puddles of fallen fuel were ignited after dawn;[1] the cause of the explosion remains unknown, while witnesses has stated that the broken pipeline was tapped when the blast occurred.[1] The death toll is feared to be at the hundreds, with a Reuters news agency photographer estimates 500 bodies in the scene,[2] while a senior official for the Nigerian Red Cross indicated "over 200 and still counting",[1] adding that a number of houses had been destroyed, along with a mosque and a church.[2]
