Chartered Mathematician
In the United Kingdom, the Chartered Mathematician (CMath) designation represents high levels of professionalism and competence in Mathematics[1]. It is awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) to practicing professional mathematicians who demonstrate, as well as their professional status and competence, a commitment to keep pace with advancing knowledge in mathematics and its applications.
Gaining Chartered Mathematician designation follows a rigorous, peer-reviewed process. This process is broadly similar to that required by other Chartered professions in the United Kingdom[2], such as Chartered Engineer.
All those on the register of Chartered Mathematicians will have met, and must continue to uphold, the requirements in all four of the following components:
- Education
- Postgraduate training and experience
- Professional standing
- Continuing Professional Development
These requirements are summarised below[1].
Educational requirements
Holding any one of the following, or its equivalent.
- An approved MMath honours degree.
- An approved BSc honours degree in Mathematics followed by a higher level taught or research degree (e.g. MSc, PhD) in Mathematics or a cognate subject.
- An approved BSc honours degree in Mathematics followed by subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competences to those specified by the QAA for taught masters degrees.
Postgraduate Training and Experience requirements
Having at least five years postgraduate training and experience, including employment for a minimum of two years, requiring the application of mathematical knowledge.
Professional Standing requirements
Having been employed at an appropriate level of professional standing for a minimum period of two years in which the professional skills of a Chartered Mathematician are pertinent to the execution of the duties of the post.
Continuing Professional Development requirements
A commitment to maintaining Continuing Professional Development (CPD) throughout one's career.
Post-nominal letters
Chartered Mathematicians are entitled to use the title ‘Chartered Mathematician’ and may use CMath as a prefix to membership grade (i.e. CMath MIMA or CMath FIMA). This title and the post-nominal letters are legally protected by civil law, in accordance with Royal Charter.
