Price Look-Up numbers, commonly called PLU numbers, are affixed to produce in grocery stores. The number is a four-digit number identifying the type of produce, sometimes including the variety. Organic produce is denoted by a five-digit number whose first digit is 9; an 8 prefix indicates genetically engineered food. Some PLU numbers are:

  • 4011 - banana
  • 4128 - Cripps Pink apple (trademarked Pink Lady)
  • 4016 - Red Delicious apple
  • 4377 - nectarine
