Velalar College of Engineering and Technology is an engineering college located at Thindal, Erode district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. [1] The College is affiliated to Anna University, [2]Approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), [3] accredited 'A' Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council [4] and accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) [five programes – BE – BME, CSE, ECE, EEE and B.Tech-IT][5]


History

Erode region had been deprived of educational facilities for several decades, and so many generous persons motivated by a philanthropic urge formed a trust called “Vellalar Educational Trust” which runs Velalar College of engineering and Technology (VCET). Velalar College of Engineering and Technology, one of the best-known self-financing, co-educational institutions in Erode District, aims to achieve excellence in Engineering education, with a strong emphasis on the uplift of rural students who have only limited avenues for higher education. The college was established in the year 2001, with 3 B.E. programmes. Now the college offers 8 UG programmes in Engineering and Technology, and 6 PG programmes with all in-built infrastructural facilities. It offers quality education to empower the students for facing all challenges in their career environment after they graduate from the portals of the college. Other Institutions runs by the trust are Vellalar College for Women (Govt. Aided-Autonomous) since 1970, Vellalar Matriculation Higher Secondary School for Girls from 1980, Vellalar High School for Girls since 2005, Vellalar Vidyalayaa(CBSE) since 2010, Vellalar College of Education for Women from 2005, Vellalar Techers' Training Institute since 2006, Vellalar College of Nursing since 2006.

Admissions

Admissions is through Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) ranking based on 12th standard exam results facilitated by Directorate Of Technical Education (DoTE). MBA, MCA and ME admissions are based on ranking in TANCET examination conducted by Anna University. The Counselling code of the Institution is 2723.

Library

The central library was established in the year 2001.It is housed in a four storeyed building located at the eastern side in the main building. The total area of the library is 1197.86 sq.m, and well equipped with reference books, textbooks, journals, magazines and newspapers etc. All the books are bar-coded and bar-code laser scanners are used at the circulation counter for book transactions. All books are classified according to D.D.C Scheme. The Seating capacity of the library is 300 and Provides Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) service to its users in addition to the other usual services. Digital Library section equipped with 34 terminals and internet access facility to facilitate access to the DELNET, NPTEL, e_books and IEEE ASPP online resources.

Placement

The college has a dynamic and well-established "Training and Placement Cell" headed by a Placement officer and assisted by two placement Officers along with one faculty co-coordinator from each Department as well as student co-coordinators from each Department.

Placement is the main institutional activity to extend job opportunities to the students under proper guidance. The placement cell interacts with many organizations across the country for arranging campus interviews for the placement of final year students.

The training and placement call arranges career guidance programmes (CGP), soft skills programmes, personality, development programmes through external experts. Such programmes are arranged for the students to develop their communication skills and to build their self-confidence. Also trainings in aptitude and in C,C++ language are arranged to improve their technical knowledge. Before the campus interviews, mock interviews are conducted to enhance the skills of the students and to motivate them in order to enable them to face the interviews successfully. The pre-final year students are also trained with the help of expertise of final year students (already placed)

MOUs have been signed with reputed companies for soft skills, guest lectures, industrial visits, project guidance and recruitments.

Accommodation

The College maintains its reputation for high standards of the hostels. The Gents hostel accommodates 250 students and the Ladies hostel accommodates 550 students. The hostels being home away from home are designed to be comfortable for studies and stay. Every students has to submit a separate application for admission to the hostel. The hostels are under the direct control of the Principal who it the Ex-officio warden. The Warden will be assisted by Deputy Wardens and hostel staff.

A wireless access point at Boys hostel and an omnidirectional Wi-Fi antenna installed at Ladies hostel enable the students to access the internet by 24x7
