Recovery Models are an approach to fostering and understanding recovery from serious mental distress/disorder or sustance dependency. They are generally based on a philosophy of support, respect, empowerment and social inclusion. Recovery can be defined as "an individual’s journey of healing and transformation to live a meaningful life in a community of his or her choice while striving to achieve maximum human potential” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2005). Recovery models are sometimes contrasted with medical models when they are seen as emphasizing illness, impairment and medical authority.

Recovery models and approaches can be adopted by mental health professionals, by individuals with personal experience of recovery, or by non-experts.
