Mälarenergi AB is a city-owned electric power and district heating provider based in Västerås, Sweden.
History
In 2016, the company announced it would move its headquarters in a new building shared with Vafab Environment and Mimer.[1]
In December 2017, the Consumer Agency blamed Mälarenergi for exaggerating the eco-friendliness of its electricity that was being falsely advertised as 100% hydro-powered.[2] In September 2018, Asoos Rasool, CEO of the company since 2013, left his position.[3]
In October 2019, Mälarenergi started discussions to build a water pipe connecting Västerås and Enköping.[4]
Description
The company owns the grid in Västmanland and produces electricity, district heating and cooling with a turnover of 3.0 billion SEK, and 145 000 customers, as of 2009[update].
Mälarenergi owns and operates a number of plants, mostly for the production of electricity and heating but also plants for tap water production and waste water purification. The biggest plant is Kraftvärmeverket in Västerås. This is Sweden's largest combined power and heating plant, and the newest part, called Block 6, can use waste as fuel.[5]
Mälarenergi has around 600 employees and six subsidiaries: Mälarenergi Försäljning AB, Mälarenergi Vattenkraft AB, Mälarenergi Stadsnät AB, Stadsnät i Svealand AB med dotterbolaget SamKom AB, Mälarenergi Ångturbinen AB and Mälarenergi Fastighet AB.
The company is owned by the municipality but run as a private company. It pays SEK 54 million worth of dividends every year to the city of Västerås.[6]
