The red raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus), also known as garden raspberry leaf, is produced by the deciduous raspberry plant and used in folk remedies.[1]

Belonging to the family of Rosaceae, raspberry is a sub-shrub that grows wild usually in the western regions of Western Europe.

Composition of Raspberry Leaves

Raspberry leaves are rich in iron, vitamins C and E, B, A, calcium, potassium, magnesium minerals and folic acid. They also contain flavonoids and tannins. Raspberry leaf is also known for its content in chromium, zinc, and manganese.

A herbal tea with a raspberry leaf provides many benefits. Indeed, thanks to the virtues it offers, this plant represents an effective remedy for many female troubles, since it can:

  • tone the uterus;
  • recover a hormonal balance;
  • regulate the menstrual cycle;
  • stimulate fertility;
  • promote labour during childbirth;
  • relieve the symptoms of menopause.

Use in pregnancy

Traditional lore suggests that pregnant women use raspberry leaf tea, especially as an aid in delivery.[2] However, scientific research has found little to no evidence to support this claim.[3] Most of the evidence available is anecdotal, and a 2009 review article stressed concern at the lack of evidence for safety and efficacy and called recommendations of its use "questionable".[3]
