Factory service manual

Factory service manuals (FSM) are the manuals provided by manufacturers which cover the servicing, repair and maintenance of their products. Factory Repair and Service manuals are not originally offered to the public as they were developed for the dealerships so that their mechanics were able to fix their own products.

Many after-market manuals are available, with most of them referencing as either "Service Manual, "Repair Manual", "Workshop Manual" or " Factory Service Manual". While these manuals usually covers for topics such as torque specifications, dimensions and part numbers.

The Manual usually contains all information required to assist service engineers with all work, repair and maintenance on their vehicle. The repair documentation provides detailed information regarding repair procedures, installation instructions, circuits and diagrams and troubleshooting information.

For vehicles, the following content are usually covered: body, frame & mounting, engine, suspension, driveline, brake systems, transmission/transaxle, clutch, chains, exhaust, fuel, steering, shocks, climate control, instrumentation & Warnings Systems, battery & charging systems, audio, lighting, electrical distribution, and wiring.

Service Manuals

Service Manuals commonly known as Repair Manual, Shop Manual or Workshop Manual are often the same manuals and contains the details steps instruction from the dealership on fix an equipment. These manuals are broken down into different chapters and contain information on how to replace and fix different parts. Some Service Manuals also contains references to the different troubleshooting code that may arise when a machine fails. The availability of Service manuals is often scared compared to the Owner’s Manual’s which are provided together with a vehicle. To this date certain manufacturer still restrict access to their Service Manuals.

Parts Manuals

The Parts Manuals or Parts Catalog is different from the Service Manuals as it only contains a list of different parts for the machine. These manuals will usually contain the reference number or code of each parts. As such, there is a detailed breakdown of specific parts which multiple diagrams and fine details. In some cases, even details like nuts numbers are provided. The Parts Manual work side by side with the service manuals as this is the official guide for parts references that will be used when ordering parts from the manufacturer or the registered supplier.
