@Eyesnore and MSGJ: I have never seen this message for a list-defined reference although it's possible it can also occur there. Previously we have only linked list-defined reference in cases where the default message in [1] says in <code><references></code> to indicate the problem is there. Remove "Invalid <ref> tag" consistent with other modified reference error interface messages that originally contained it. It should read the following:

The named reference "$1" was invoked multiple times with different content

@Eyesnore: You made a similar edit request 3 years ago that was reverted for basically not having been tested. Could you please verify that in this case the message corresponds to a duplicate named reference?
