The rank of Assistant Commandant is equivalent to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)/ Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)/ Captain in the Indian army. This rank is a Group-A gazetted officer rank in Central Armed Police Forces of India.

Assistant commandants in Central Armed Police Forces are appointed through UPSC selection process[1] and are called directly appointed gazetted officers (DAGOs).[2] These officers can reach up to the rank of Additional Director General (ADG).[3].But in future they will get the top rank of Director General (DG) in their own organizations [citation needed] as they are better than IPS officers in terms of field posting, training and harsh terrain operation experiences. They can command the company better than IPS. They serve under the authority of Ministry of Home Affairs (India).

Recently, the Government of India declared this service as an "Organised Group-A" service along with Non-Functional Financial Upgradation (NFFU) & Non functional selection grade (NFSG) like other central services.

The directly recruited officers takes the charge of a company (approx 136 personnel) as a company commander after the completion of their rigorous training course. They also serve in various important organisations such as RAW, NSG, SPG, NIA, IB, CBI, NDRF, NCB and Indian Army on deputation. Their role and performance, therefore, assumes a great significance due to the special features of an emergency force which is pressed in aid to civil power to perform multiple roles in extremely difficult situations.

Recruitment

The intake of officers at the level of assistant commandant is 50% through direct recruitment through UPSC CAPF competition exam, 33% by promoting Inspectors and remaining 17% through the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination, wherein inspectors and sub-inspectors fulfilling the criteria are eligible.

The direct recruitment of gazetted officers is done through the All India level competitive examination known as UPSC CAPF (AC).
